A lack of motivation at work is becoming a bit of a problem. A recent study by Gallup found that only 13% of employees are actively engaged at work; that is pretty serious (particularly for your boss!) so how can we improve our motivational levels at work? The first thing is to realise that a lack of motivation in your job doesn’t mean that you are lazy or a bad employee, rather it is more likely because you are no longer connected to the job you’re doing. So now we know that beating ourselves up won’t help, it’s time to rediscover the love you used to have with our top tips.
FIND WORK THAT INTERESTS YOU
The number one reason for a lack of motivation is not being into the job that you are doing! Finding a new job is not necessarily the way to fix this, working on a new project or changing roles within the company may be enough to perk your levels of interest again.
LEARN A NEW SKILL
The very action of learning means that you are engaged with what you are doing, which is great for your motivation levels. Plus, if the skill will improve your performance at work, you may find that your company is willing to pay for the course/let you have time off to complete it. And if not, adding a new skill to your CV will make you more employable in the future!
SET SMALL, ACHIEVABLE GOALS
If you have a long project ahead of you, it’s only natural that motivation can wane when it seems there isn’t an end in sight. To counteract this, set yourself small, achievable goals – either daily or weekly – and give yourself a quiet pat on the back each time you tick one off. It feels good, and lots of little boosts will see you through to the bigger goal of completing the project.
GIVE YOURSELF A FRESH START
Don’t wait until 1st January for a fresh start, you can have one on 14th June if you like! A fresh start means we are metaphorically letting go of the mistakes we had been making, and we get the welcome energy boost that comes with starting a new project.
FIND A QUOTE THAT MEANS SOMETHING TO YOU
There is a reason why motivational quotes are amongst the most shared posts on social media, and brands like Black n Red are including some of the best loved in their notebooks. A good quote is a bit like a mentor telling you that you CAN do something. If someone believes in you, this can have the positive boost your motivational level needs.
